Puddling is a process which lines any channel with puddle clay, making a watertight, strong clay base. Puddling clay was first used on canal systems and remains in use today to maintain them. It was also used on a lot of the reservoirs across Britain. It can also be used as core for earth filled dams.

Puddling clay has been used for hundreds of years as a lining for ponds, canals and reservoirs. It is also used in more modern times for the lining and capping of landfill sites to prevent pollution and leaching. “Puddling” is the process which lines any channel with puddle clay, making a watertight, strong clay base.

It has also been used as a core for earth filled dams. The method of lining Puddled clay in a pond is simple and a lot more natural than using flexible pond liners that are not as durable and cheap.
Puddle clay is the most natural way of lining your pond – it is more wildlife and eco-friendly. It is also a simple process – all it needs is for the clay to be compacted so that the air bubbles are totally squeezed out, this forms a strong watertight barrier, this can be accomplished by using a tractor, digger or a compactor over the surface.
Our Blue Lias Engineering puddle clay is of the highest quality. It is tested to BS1377 Cause 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9. It is also suitable for landfill engineering and meets the Highway works specification for a Cohesive Fill Material (Class 2A, 2B and 2D)
It meets with all the NRA landfill engineering quality control standards it has a low hydraulic conductivity meaning if installed correctly it provides a water tight impermeable barrier and is used for many applications including, construction of ponds, lakes etc, lining reservoirs and canals, repairing dams, capping off tips and sealing contaminated ground as well as lining your garden pond.
Our clay has been supplied all over the UK in both large and small quantities and has been used on major projects by Water Authorities, Local Authorities, Multinational and National Contractors, Groundworkers, National and Local Landscape Contractors as well as many smaller projects by private individuals.
We recommend a minimum depth of 200mm (ideally 200 – 300mm) depending on the size of the pool you are forming, of puddling clay to form a barrier to keep your water in the pool, thicker layers if subject to erosion and heavy use.
Once delivered the clay needs to be “puddled” i.e. mixed with water to give it the plasticity / consistency to be spread at sufficient thickness to provide the impermeable layer. The Puddling clay can be applied either manually or mechanically. The pond should be filled with water straight away to prevent the clay drying out and cracking. Please note that it will take some time for the sediment to settle once the pond is full.
